Lydney Town
History
Situated near the beautiful Forest of Dean on the west bank of the River Severn, Lydney Town Band has been in existence since 1892.
Over the 20th century theband became an integral part of the local community, and attended various contests across the country, including several trips to the Crystal Palace contest in the 1930s. After the Second World War, the band reached the National Championships on five occasions between 1958 and 1998, and won West of England regional titles in 1973, 1990, and 1997, eventually being promoted to the championship section for the first time.
A decline in fortunes saw the band almost fold in 2005, but the small remaining group led by Kevin and Kerry Ford and Roger and Ken Powell decided to rebuild from the ground up, founding Lydney Training Band. The ensemble has since grown into a thriving training organisation, teaching people of all ages how to play brass instruments. From this, Lydney Town Band was resurrected as a competitive entity in 2012, eventually going on to represent the West of England at the Section Four National Championships in 2016, and in Section Three in 2024.
Today, the band continues to enjoy competing and performing in the local community, striving for a high standard of performance whilst focusing on the enjoyment of making music together.
