Raunds Temperance

History

Raunds Temperance Band was founded in 1886 by the Temperance Society, with their first concert being held in Upper Dean to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887. By the 1920s, they had achieved notable successes, including a 2nd place at Crystal Palace and several awards at Skegness, earning significant prize money for the time. The 1930s saw further triumphs, with the band winning 1st prize in the League of Bands Contest of Great Britain.

Despite challenges during the war, the band persisted thanks to the dedication of older members and young aspiring musicians. After fluctuating success in the latter half of the 20th century, a resurgence began under John Fletcher’s leadership in 1996, leading to a climb from the 4th section to the Championship Section by 2007.

Now under leadership from Musical Director Jonathan Pippen and Resident Conductor John Hudson, the band continues to thrive and achieve notable successes in competitions, maintaining its legacy and reputation. The Band are the current Leicester Contest and Midlands Area Champions and are looking forward to competing in the First Section in 2025.
