Horbury Victoria

History

Horbury Victoria band was established in 1866 to play for the village events. Today this has evolved into a four band organisation. The core of the band is to teach young people to play brass instruments. There are Learner/Intermediate/Youth and Senior sections.

The current Senior Band are now playing at the highest level that the band have ever achieved in its 157 year history. Nearly 50% of the players in the senior band started their playing career with the Band. This is testimony to the tuition the players receive. The band have been fortunate to have had a very long and consistent programme of teaching, with Tom Greatorex giving over 40 years of teaching and conducting to all sections of the organisation. The lower bands are now conducted by Michael Dodd. Duncan Beckley has conducted the Senior Band for over 11 years and taken them too many contesting successes. Under his direction they have become the band they are today.

At its heart Horbury Victoria Band is still a proud village band wanting to bring music to many, but the organisation knows that to survive it needs to continue with its training programme to create the players of the future.
