Hebden Bridge

History

Hebden Bridge is situated in the heart of the Calder Valley and is a picturesque market town and tourist destination, the bridge from which its name originates dates back to 1510.  Whilst not as old as the bridge, records of the band in the town exist going back to 1856.  Hebden Bridge Band continues to represent the town that bears its name and has enjoyed the support of the local community, from which many of the musicians come, regularly putting on free to attend concerts to encourage the enjoyment of music.

Throughout its more than 160 year life the band has seen some famous names associated with it, perhaps the most famous association being with the Mortimer family, the band at one time being conducted by Fred Mortimer. The band minute book still exists which records that “Master Harry Mortimer be provided with a cornet on which to learn”. The band is now under the leadership of Musical Director Christopher Binns who led them to success at the 2nd section National Championships of Great Britain in September 2021, Yorkshire First Section title in 2023 and the Buxton Open Brass Band Championships in May 2023.
