Newland Concert

History

The band was formed in 1987 with an emphasis on concerts as the name suggests. “Newland” was taken from the venue where the first rehearsal took place ie. Newland Academy in Bathgate whose benefactor was John Newland. The blue uniform of Newland Concert Brass is well recognised in West Lothian as a result of playing at gala days, concerts and the Bathgate Procession and John Newland Festival.

Newland has contested in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sections and has qualified for the British Championships on four occasions.

Newland welcome players of all ages and levels of ability and also have a thriving junior band. Newland Concert Brass have raised thousands of pounds through charity concerts over the years, raising money for charities including Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation and Beat Scad UK.

In 1988 the band made its first trip abroad; a concert tour of Hochsaurland in Germany. This visit developed links with both the area and a German band, Neheim-Husten Fanfarenkorps. The following year a partnership was agreed and since then both bands have taken part in many exchange visits over the years.

Newland Concert Brass were delighted to welcome Simon Railton as their new Musical Director in October 2018. During his short time with the band, Simon, who also plays front row cornet with the award-winning Whitburn Band, has conducted Newland at several successful sell-out concerts as well as leading them to second place at the Scottish Championships in Perth this year.
